We’ll support the top 10 entrepreneurial approaches toward climate and renewable energy activism on campus with $500 mini-grants. The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) has had a terrible first year. Inexcusably, it has not condemned the government of Sudan for its support of —and participation in— atrocities in Darfur, nor has it condemned the government of Burma for its campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Karen people and other ethnic minorities in Eastern Burma. Conservative media in the United States is rife with accusations that human rights activists and organizations are hypocritically turning a blind eye to the failings of the Council. This is simply not true.

9/11 may have taken the lives of three thousand Americans, but it has negatively impacted the lives of millions more the world over. Americans now live in a state of perpetual fear — fear of terrorists, of weapons of mass destruction and of dangerous ideologies that have the power to kill. Now juxtapose this scenario on Muslims, who are bearing the greatest brunt of the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, but who suffer — often silently — not willing to tell their story. I am one of those people. But I chose not to remain silent.
