Anti-Slavery Summit and Fashion Show 2008 |
||||
Come be part of the emerging, student anti-trafficking movement! When: February 23, 2008, 10:00am-6:00pm – Registration begins at 9:15am.
The Nova Southeastern University (NSU) chapter of Americans for Informed Democracy, along with the fellow non-governmental organizations Miami Movement Against Human Trafficking (MMAHT) and the Institute for Universal Human Rights, will host a summit to educate the public and students about modern day slavery around the world. The summit will address:
Why: Anti-Slavery International estimates that there are approximately 27 million slaves today--more than at any other point in history. Slave work might have contributed to the production of goods we take for granted and enjoy. For example, the cocoa from which a tasty chocolate bar you delight in and look forward to all week; the beautiful and expensive rugs you admired in a store; and the clothing items you proudly wear might all have been farmed or made by slaves. Slavery is not only found in the Global South, where individuals in need of an income are easy pray of slave handlers, but also in countries such as the United States; Florida alone is considered to be among the top three states in the nation on human trafficking.
