Q: Where is Washington and Lee and how do I get there?

Q: How many Global Scholars are there?
A: The Global Scholar Class of 2007 was comprised of 44 students hailing from diverse locations and backgrounds.
Q: What is the housing like?
A: As a special treat this year, Global Scholar staff and students will be housed in Washington and Lee’s sorority houses, as the dormitories are under renovation. Much like the dorms, the sorority houses will have double and single dorm rooms, with staff rooms on each floor – but unlike the dorms, the houses will be air-conditioned! All rooms are equipped with a bed, dresser, wardrobe, and desk for each student. The rooms also have high-speed internet access, which can be accessed using an ethernet cord.
Q: What about computer access?
A: Internet access and computers are abundant on Washington and Lee's campus. The Elrod Commons, where classes, meals, and activities are held, has several kiosks for students to log online, as well as wireless access throughout the entire building. The Leyburn library and other academic buildings have wireless, and the dorms have internet connections with ethernet cords.
Q: Should I bring spending money?
A: Most of your expenses will be covered, but it is a good idea to bring some spending money if you'd like to purchase anything in downtown Lexington, Washington DC, at the W&L bookstore, or during an optional trip to Wal-Mart at the beginning of the program. Make sure to bring quarters for laundry!
Q: What are we doing for the 4th of July?
A: The Washington and Lee Campus and the Virginia Military Institute are located right next to one another in historic Lexington, Virginia. On VMI's parade grounds on the evening of July 4th, we'll go to a huge festival with food, crafts, live music, entertainment, games, hot air balloon rides, and of course, fireworks!
Q: What should I do to prepare for the program?
A: There will be plenty of time to study and work hard once you get to Lexington. Just enjoy your summer and stay tuned to current events. The BBC offers a great website for keeping up to date on international events. If you prefer periodicals, we suggest The Economist and the New York Times.
Q: What is the schedule for the first and last day?
June 28th:
12:00 - 4:30 p.m. - Open Registration at the Early Fielding Building located on Washington Street
5:00 - 6:00 p.m. - Dinner, Elrod Student Center
6:00 - 7:30 p.m. - Campus Tour
8:00 - 10:00 p.m. - Orientation, Elrod 345
Academics begin on June 29th at 8:30 a.m. Please see Directions for more information on arriving on campus.
July 12th:
12:00 - 1:15 p.m. - Global Governance Simulation Final Presentation (Family and friends are invited!)
1:30 - 2:30 p.m. - Picnic Luncheon
3:30 p.m. - Shuttle departs for Roanoke Airport and Staunton train station

Q: What's the food like?
A: Meals are served in the Market Place of the new Elrod Student Center. Students can choose from a selection of salads, grill items, pasta, fruit, hot meals, ice cream, and other delicious combinations prepared daily!
