Global issue of most interest: The current immigration problem. I feel that this is an issue that has been put on the back burner for too long, and now that it is in the forefront of north american politics, a resolution needs to emerge, and one that does not involve deporting 18 million undocumented aliens, an effort that is highly unnfeasible, and directly tied to the detriment of our economy.

Sugandha Singh
Hometown: Dalton, GA
Favorite part of Global Scholar: The intense intellectual and political debates about the Middle East, economics, nuclear proliferation... that would last for what seemed like hours till they eventually turned into debates over whether we should play ultimate frisbee, foosball, pool, capture the flag, or soccer and then eventually we would just go eat some food and give each other a huge group hug. I couldn't pick a favorite part so I tried to write one long sentence that encompassed everything.

Caroline Solis
Hometown: Findlay, OH
Favorite part of Global Scholar: The videoconference with college students from Ghana, Uganda, Morroco, and Jordan was the best experience that Global Scholar or any program like it has ever given me.
Interacting and listening to the voices of students from across the world contribute their thoughts on issues opened up my eyes and mind to see how important United Nations reform is, and how much the War in Iraq has an effect on the world.
One place you'd love to travel to: I would like to travel to Sub-Saharan Africa in order to interact with the people who have been dealt the hand of extreme poverty. When here I would like the opportunity to visit schools and see the differences but also see the similarities. The suffering the people of Africa face daily would be a large part of the trip but also I want to see the joy they are able to have in such extreme conditions.
Global Issue of most concern: The enviorment has been one issue I have sincerly dedicated myself to learning about as well as spread awareness about. With a lack of international effort to truly target this issue (the failure of the Kyoto Protocol, and a very general mention in the Millenium Developement Goals) it is an issue that is more global than we can even image. Unlike any other issue it effects every single person on the earth.
Hobbies: Currently I participate in the Junior Statesmen of America were I will undertake to the a Department of Activism across Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia. I have also become a member of NetAid's Global Citizens Corps to spread awareness of global poverty in my school. Swimming has continued to be a large part of my activities as well. I enjoy black and white photography in my spare time as well. |
