AID is calling for applications from globally conscious college students who are interested in a dynamic and fast-paced spring internship that will give them a hands-on introduction to the fields of global education, global development, global health, environmental sustainability, peace and security, non-profit management and arts and activism. This internship program offers students an unparalleled introduction to the diverse professional opportunities within international NGOs. Interns help lead media outreach, grant-writing, partnership development, fundraising, civic education, and long-term strategy development. AID's internship is unique in involving college students directly in the highest levels of the organization's management, allowing them to play influential roles in shaping the group's agenda. We will work with your educational institution for academic credit, if needed.
Americans for Informed Democracy is recruiting interns for the following positions for Summer 2008:
- Development Assistant: The Development Assistant will work closely with AID’s Development Coordinator to organize campus forums, regional summits, film screenings, fundraisers, and video-conferences on global poverty, women’s empowerment, water scarcity, human rights and fair trade with campus leaders across the country. The Development Assistant will work with the Development Coordinator to assist campus leaders in implementing local and national development campaigns. The Development Assistant position is perfect for someone interested in these issues, particularly if the candidate has experience as a campus organizer and activist.
- Global Health Assistant: The Global Health Assistant will work closely with AID’s Global Health Coordinator to organize campus forums, regional summits, film screenings, fundraisers and video-conferences on global health, HIV/AIDS and malaria with campus leaders across the country. The Global Health Assistant will work with the Global Health Coordinator to assist campus leaders in implementing local and national health campaigns, and helping to engage students in birddogging campaigns on health issues around the 2008 presidential elections. This will include working to mobilize students in key states for candidate events, working in Washington DC with AID’s health partners, and helping to partner and collaborate with other global health organizations. The Global Health Assistant position is perfect for someone interested in these issues, particularly if the candidate has experience as a campus organizer and activist. Experience working in the health field in any capacity is a plus.

Global Environment Program Assistant: The Global Environment Program Assistant will work closely with AID’s Global Environment Program Director to organize campus forums, regional summits, film screenings, fundraisers and video-conferences on climate change, environmental protection, and forest protection with campus leaders across the country. The Global Environment Program Assistant will be working to assist campus leaders in implementing local and national environmental campaigns in taking on the Campus Climate Challenge, passing climate change legislation, and influencing international climate policy-making. The Global Environment Program Assistant position is perfect for someone interested learning about influencing global policy through grassroots action, particularly if the candidate has experience as a campus organizer and activist.
- Hope Not Hate/Peace and Security Assistant: The Hope Not Hate/Peace and Security Assistant will work to develop the US-Muslim World Relations programming, including US-Iran relations. Tasks include locating speakers for major conferences, administrative duties on conference material and post-conference follow-up, attend meetings with director, and assist campus leaders to conduct film screenings, fundraisers, conferences, and video-conferences. Familiarity with Islam and cross-cultural dialogue is strongly desired. Experience with Middle East affairs and nuclear nonproliferation also preferred. Travel may be included. This position is perfect for someone interested in nonprofit work in the field of peace and security and interfaith dialogue.In preparation for Americans for Informed Democracy’s main fall series, Hope Not Hate, on the future of Western-Muslim world relations, the Hope Not Hate Assistant will work throughout the spring on this initiative. The Assistant will work on a major fall conference as well as locating speakers, potential partners and resources for the fall campus initiative. The Assistant will also work on Peace and Security Initiatives, organizing campus forums, regional summits, film screenings and video-conferences on these issues. Arabic ability is very desirable.
- Digital Organizing Assistant: Americans for Informed Democracy is seeking an assistant to develop AID's capacity to organize young Americans taking leadership on global issues online and with digital technology. AID works with 23,000 students on over a 1000 campuses and is developing more sophisticated communications and organizing technologies to reach them. While extensive experience isn’t necessary, the applicant should have some experience with editing websites and/or graphic design. We are seeking applicants interested in the intersection of technology and global leadership. The digital organizing assistant will gain experience in applying online skills to producing offline results and engaging a global audience.

New Media Assistant: Americans for Informed Democracy is seeking an assistant to advance the vision of youth taking global leadership for an interdependent world in the realm of new and social media. The ideal applicant will have a vision of advancing global leadership in online media, such as blogs, social networks, email listserves, and new systems. While extensive experience isn’t necessary, the applicant should know the difference between a blog and a social network and Flickr from YouTube. We are seeking excellent writers who are passionate about issues, debate, and innovation. The new media assistant will learn how to advance ideas in new medias and learn how to become an opinion leader through digital media.
- Marketing and Design/Arts and Activism Assistant: Marketing and Design Assistant will spearhead AID’s publicity efforts for 2007-2008. This intern would ideally have a creative flair and a background in graphic design, video editing, film, art and/or media relations. The Assistant would put together poster templates for the use of AID’s campus organizers as well as brochures and publicity materials for AID’s central organization. This position would also devise creative strategies for using arts and culture to promote activism.
- Grants Management Assistant : The Grants Management Assistant will play a critical role in researching foundation and other support for AID, developing a grants strategy, drafting foundation grants and reports. This is a perfect position for someone interested in non-profit management or business. A strong writing background is preferred.
AID’s 2008 Summer Internship Program will take place in our organization’s Baltimore, Maryland headquarters. The eleven week interships will run from June 1st - August 15th. Group housing is provided by AID, however the internship is unpaid. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until April 30, 2008, though we highly encourage early submission.
