Young Innovator in Sustainable Living: Katherine Wingfield

Katherine Wingfield was the Founder and President of the Christopher Newport University chapter of Americans for Informed Democracy. In that role, she put on a series of events to persuade the mayor of Newport News, Virginia, to reduce the community’s carbon footprint. After attending a leadership summit with AID, Katherine helped set up a global videoconference on her campus that allowed her peers to talk face-to-face with students in Ecuador, Ghana, and beyond on global environmental and security issues. She then launched a successful, yearlong advocacy campaign to convince her mayor to sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, a commitment to to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to below 1990 levels. The city government was not even familiar with the Agreement when Katherine first approached them, and now the city is part of a nationwide network of cities working together to take local action on improving the environment for future generations.
- The Young Innovator in Smart Invested award will be presented by Caroline Kemp, the former President of the AID Chapter at Northwestern University. Caroline is a rising senior at Northwestern University and has spent summers working at leading think tanks such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. Caroline has recently returned from spending her junior year at Oxford University.
