Americans for Informed Democracy (AID) is pleased to announce its Spring 2008 Global Health summit in London, United Kingdom. The summit will assemble high-achieving young global leaders for workshops, speakers, and discussions on the theme of Global Health. The summit will take place from April 18-20, 2008, at Syracuse University’s Centre in downtown London.
The summit will feature issue-specific panels and lectures, skill-building workshops, strategies for talking about global health, and a Do-IT-yourself opportunity where students will choose to either design a campaign to run on their campus, or write a policy proposal. There will also be sessions on how to organize health events and take action on campus and in the community.
The summit will also include panel discussions with top policymakers, journalists, and scholars.
Tentative Schedule:
Friday April 18th
1:00pm – 1:30pm: Registration and Light Refreshments
1:30pm – 2:00pm: Welcome and Defining Conference Goals - Americans for Informed Democracy
2:00pm – 3:00pm: Keynote- Rhona MacDonald, Senior Editor of The Lancet
3:15pm – 4:45pm: Panel: What are the Determinants of Health? Defining and Deconstructing Economic, Cultural, Social and Rights Issues as They Relate to Global Health

5:00pm – 6:00pm: Intros Among Students and Panel Debriefing in Small Groups (students will break into small groups and use this time to get to know one-another, comment on issues panel speakers addresses)
6:00pm – 7:00pm: Academic Workshops: How Can We Effectively Contextualize Health Issues So We Can Take Substantive Action?
- Workshop on Worldwide Eradication of Polio- Dr. Aleta Labiento and Hofstra University Students
- Workshop Trade and Access to Essential Medicines- Kaytee Riek, HealthGAP
7:15pm – 8:00pm: Dinner and Debrief/Discuss on the Day’s Events
8:15pm: Depart for London Sightseeing in Groups (at participant’s expense)

The London summit costs 50 pounds and includes five meals, tourist activities in London and AID’s signature organizer’s toolkit. Thanks to the generous support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Hewlett Foundation, Open Society Institute, and Ford Foundation, partial scholarships are available to the summit for select students.
