In Vermillion, a moment of silence will be held before the 2 p.m. Saturday kickoff for the University of South Dakota football game in the DakotaDome. More details on the pre-game ceremony will be announced today (Thursday), USD officials said.
In addition, USD will host a "Hope, Not Hate" town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in Farber Hall. The event will focus on U.S.-Muslim relations.
Speakers include former U.S. Senator James Abourezk; Syrian native Sanaa Abourezk, author of the book "Equal Justice in the Balance: America's Legal Responses to the Emerging Terrorist Threat"; Creighton University law professor and author Michael J. Kelly; and Iowa congressional candidate Sal Mohammed, who is originally from Egypt.
The event is part of a national "Hope, Not Hate" movement from Sept. 8 through Oct. 12 where concerned citizens throughout the U.S. will participate in town hall meetings on the future of U.S.-Muslim world relationships. Students across America have joined together with many 9/11 family members with the hope of inspiring a new generation of U.S.-Muslim relations based on understanding and mutual respect.
There will also be an opportunity to participate in a live teleconference between students from USD and the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, at 10 a.m. October 21 at the Continuing Education building.
