Greetings! Congress was in recess this week, but I have several news items to report from the district. Don’t forget to “spring forward” for daylight savings time this weekend.
As always, I hope you’ll find this week’s Barton Bytes interesting and informative. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if there’s anything I may do to be of assistance.
Best wishes,
Joe Barton
Member of Congress
Intern participates in video conferences
An intern in my Washington office was recently able to attend very informative briefings and seminars. Umer Khan, my intern in this semester, has attended a series of video conferences linking the World Bank in Washington with a variety of countries abroad. These events were organized by a non-profit organization, Americans for Informed Democracy.
In January, Umer attended a video conference discussing the recent tsunami disaster in Asia. The video conference linked UT-Arlington and the World Bank in Washington DC with Sri Lanka. He was joined by students from George Washington University and some non-profit organizations. Umer communicated directly with the tsunami victims and relief workers and broadened his understanding of the extent of the disaster and the status of relief efforts.
I think one-on-one conversations like these could go a long way in presenting the face of international relations, and I will continue to encourage my interns to enrich their experience in Washington by attending such informative events.
