Environmental town meeting at St. Mike's on Thursday

A town hall meeting scheduled Thursday at St. Michael's College will explore U.S. security, the global environment and how relatively small communities like Colchester can improve the environment, locally and globally.

The event will feature a presentation from Julie Starr, a population and environmental specialist with the National Wildlife Federation. Her topic is called "Thinking Globally and Acting Globally: Why Population, Gender and the Environment Matter for International Policy."

The discussion, at noon in the McCarthy Auditorium, is free and open to the public. The talk is sponsored by Americans for Informed Democracy's St. Michael's College chapter. The non-partisan group raises awareness of global issues such as environmental problems and population growth, said Bryan Branon, the St. Michael's College leader of the group.

"All these intertwining factors are coming together in Vermont," said Branon, 22, a senior majoring in political science and minoring in journalism.
