SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College student organization AWARE is hosting a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 13, as part of a nationwide series, “Securing the Future,” to discuss oil dependency and climate change.
John Grant, campaign coordinator for the National Resources Defense Council Action Fund in Washington, D.C., will be the speaker at the 11:15 a.m. event, which is free and open to the public. The program will be held in the Anna Todd Wofford Center on the Wofford campus. A free lunch will served, but reservations are required. (Contact Lianne Moore at lianne.moore@gmail.com or (803) 260-3683 to make your reservation; the deadline for reservations is Monday, Feb. 12, at noon.)
Grant will give a brief opening presentation on oil dependency and climate change and the role individuals and communities can play to mitigate the problem. After the presentation, he will lead the attendees in an interactive question and answer session.
AWARE (Activists Wanting Awareness, Reaction and Engagement) is a Wofford student organization that educates and engages students on social justice issues through partnerships with national non-profit organizations and other student groups.
Nationwide, the town hall series will feature expert speakers who each play a different role in addressing these issues. “Securing the Future” will bring together community members to discuss the effects of oil dependency and climate change on national security, human health as well as the economy. In addition to conversations within the U.S, the series includes international videoconference dialogues about the changing global environment between young leaders from universities across the U.S. and around the world.
“Securing the Future” was created to equip service-minded students with the tools to educate and rally their communities around key international issues, such as energy security and climate change. The series comes at a particularly critical time as the U.S. and the world together face critical climate challenges. The conference brings American youth one step closer to the flurry of activity in Congress, as Republicans and Democrats alike have put forth legislative proposals exploring alternative energy sources to reduce American dependence on oil imports.
The town hall series is supported by a coalition of non-profit organizations, including Americans for Informed Democracy, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. For more information on this highly influential series, visit www.AIDemocracy.org or www.NRDC.org.
