Get Your House Rep. to Support Cutting Spending on Nuclear Weapons TODAY!

Here are some stats that may surprise you:

  • Every year the US spends more than $30 billion maintaining the country’s arsenal of nuclear weapons.
  • Today, the nuclear arsenal still exceeds 5,000 warheads.
  • According to estimates, the US is expected to spend over $700 billion (you read that right, $700 billion!) over the next ten years to maintain weapons that were built during the Cold War, a war that’s been over for more than 20 years.

Representative Ed Markey (MA-7) has written a “Dear Colleague” letter to his fellow representatives asking them to encourage the budget “super-committee” to reduce spending on the nuclear arsenal by $20 billon per year over the next ten years. The money cut could then be used to avoid reductions to other essential programs such as Medicare here at home, or foreign aid (which has a special place in our hearts).

But TODAY is the deadline for representatives to sign on to the letter. Update: The deadline was extended from Tuesday to TODAY at 5:00pm!

So, take a break between classes or studying and urge your representative to sign Rep. Markey’s letter to the super committee! We spend an outrageous amount of money on these frankly outrageous weapons. It’s great to hear that there are members of Congress who feel the same way we do.

Let’s show them our support!

About Patrick McDermott

Patrick earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a Minor in International Studies from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He previously served as a Legislative Aide for PA State Senator Lisa M. Boscola, and as an intern for AIDemocracy’s Peace and Security Program. After spending some time “inside the beltway” he decided he wanted to try some “outside the beltway” work, which brought him to Washington, D.C., oddly enough. He canvassed on behalf of Save the Children for a time in the D.C./Virginia area until he joined Global Zero, which is an international, non-partisan movement dedicated to the elimination of all nuclear weapons. He ventured on a six-week road tour across the Midwest of the United States to screen a new documentary film making the case for “Zero” entitled “Countdown to Zero.”
