By Carly James Unfortunately, much of the reality of child soldiering and human trafficking in Burma is unknown. Decades of forcible isolation from external media, diplomacy, tourism, etc. has alienated the country, disallowing much of the world from a deep cultural understanding of the Southeast Asian country. In January, the Burmese government and the ethnic Karen rebels committed to a cease-fire, effectively opening the country’s doors to the outside world for the first time in over sixty years. Since then, Burma’s efforts toward progress … [Read more...]
Slavery Still Exists…But You Can Stop It!

We want to put a spotlight on an issue that is a threat to national security, public health, and democracy -- human trafficking. Worldwide, the State Department estimated there are an astounding 12.3 million adults and children in modern-day slavery! From sexual exploitation to involuntary servitude, victims of human trafficking, particularly women and children, experience horrendous crimes and injustices on a daily basis. Trafficking fuels gender violence and the subordination of women and their rights as human beings. We, as the next generation of … [Read more...]
Modern Day Slavery in the US

It is conventional wisdom that slavery is a thing of the past. It is emblematic of an era that we reflect back upon and decry “never again”. But is it really a thing of the past or has the face and form of slavery changed since the Emancipation Proclamation? The imprints of the largest U.S. human trafficking case occurs not far from where I live and study. It is a lucrative industry and was cited as the most profitable and second largest criminal activity in the world. For those of you who do not know, six recruiters from Global Horizons, an … [Read more...]
Violence against Women in Iraqi Refugee Populations

“It is perhaps more dangerous to be a woman than a soldier in armed conflict.” – Major General Patrick Cammaert Almost comparable to a food chain, violence against women is often a result of other socioeconomic factors. Conflict leads to humanitarian emergencies and the creation of refugees. The creation of refugees creates discrimination towards women that includes anything from rape to trafficking to honor killings. This sexual violence then results in health crises such as unsafe abortion, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections … [Read more...]
Start a Task Force for Human Trafficking in Kansas – Manhattan

Targeting: The Governor of KS, The KS State Senate, The KS State House, see more... Started by: Kristen Tebow, RC - Kansas/Missouri Some people say that slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The truth is that there are more slaves in America in modern times, than during the Civil War. Modern slavery has a new name. That name is human trafficking. Human trafficking is defined by the Trafficking Protocol of 2000 as "a criminal activity in which people are recruited, harboured, transported, bought, or kidnapped to serve an … [Read more...]

First day at TEN

So I was going to tell you all about my visit to the Victoria Memorial and the Kali Temple (Kalighat), and how a visitor to the former approached me and shared his views about the existence of poverty in America (blaming it on minorities), the tremendous pollution of New York or San Francisco compared to Kolkata (so not true, you can actually breath fresh air in NY or SF!), and how 80 percent of marriages in India are still arranged and he cannot marry a non-Brahmin (out of his caste) – but I’m not. What I experienced today trumps all of that. Today … [Read more...]
Kolkata: First Impressions

The people are very friendly and helpful. If you speak to them in English they will do their best to communicate with you, and if they can’t they’ll find someone who can. Many ask you where you are from and are very curious about America. Unfortunately there are also those who try to cheat you: buyer beware of some taxi drivers. On my first day around the city a cab driver almost cheated me out of 150 Rupees. When you read the meter you have to multiply the quantity there by 2 and add 2 more. For instance, if the odometer says 17, then you must pay … [Read more...]
